‘World of trouble’ – Danny Murphy shares verdict on Leeds league position

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy believes Leeds are in a ‘world of trouble’ after Jesse Marsch started his tenure with a defeat to Leicester.

The American coach was brought in to replace Marcelo Bielsa as Leeds face a relegation battle heading into the final ten games of the season, but started in the worst possible way with defeat.

But Murphy, who was speaking live on talkSPORT [12:30, March 7th], saw some positives in the performance on Saturday but still admitted the club ‘need to win some games’.

“They’re in a world of trouble, and they need to win some games,” Murphy said.

“I’ll tell you what they did do well. I watched the game in great detail. They had a nice structure, better balance, defensively looked better. But they still committed men forward and created chances.”

Encouragement

The performance against Leicester was one that fans won’t have hated, despite the result being yet another defeat to make it ten in their last 13 games.

The players seemed to take the instructions of Marsch really well, being far more structured than they were under Bielsa in defence especially, but still retaining a threat going forward.

With key players beginning to make their way back to being available again, there is plenty of room for improvement and growth between now and the end of the season.

The return of Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips could be the difference between relegation and survival, and Marsch will want to have them back available again as soon as possible.

But ultimately he can’t wait for that. Leeds need points and results now, because they’re running out of time and eventually it won’t be in their hands any more if they keep losing games.
