Michael Zetterer decides on Leeds United transfer ahead of Lucas Perri exit
Leeds United have made a fresh attempt at signing another goalkeeper.
Daniel Farke has already smashed Leeds' transfer record fee of £40million earlier this month to sign James Trafford.
But with Lucas Perri bound for Torino, his goalkeeping department is set to be stretched thin.
Alex Cairns has staked a strong claim for the backup role in pre-season, but perhaps a more proven pair of hands is desired at Elland Road.
Leeds have shopped in the European markets with confidence for some time now, and have done once again this summer.
And now, they appear to have found a goalkeeper they like residing in the German Bundesliga, but a deal could be complicated.
How does Michael Zetterer feel about Leeds move?
German outlet Absolut Fussball claims that Leeds have expressed an interest in signing Eintracht Frankfurt keeper Michael Zetterer.
It's stated that the Whites would like to bring him to Elland Road as cover for Perri's expected departure.
But, the report claims that Zetterer isn't currently keen on a move, and isn't considering leaving Frankfurt.
The 31-year-old joined Frankfurt from Werder Bremen last season, penning a four-year contract at Deutsche Bank Park.
As such, he's tied down with his current employer until the summer of 2029, meaning Leeds would have to pay a respectable fee.
But how did Zetterer get on in his debut 2025-26 season with Frankfurt, and what do his numbers suggest he'd bring to Leeds?
Why Zetterer wouldn't be slam dunk for backup Leeds job
Given the size of the investment made in Trafford, Leeds aren't likely searching for a keeper to push the Englishman for the number one job.
Instead, it's a case of would Zetterer be a considerably better number two keeper than Cairns.
His numbers from 2025-26, however, don't immediately scream as though he would be.
As per FotMob, Zetterer ranked in the bottom 40 percentile of all Bundesliga goalkeepers in 2025-26 for his 65.6 per cent save ratio.
On top of that, he also placed in the bottom 23.3 per cent for his -0.06 goals prevented per 90 minutes.
Zetterer conceded 33 goals and kept five clean sheets from 22 Bundesliga games last term, in a Frankfurt side that finished eighth.
He also failed to save the two penalties he faced, as well as making three errors leading to goals.
Meanwhile, he shipped 11 goals and kept one clean sheet in five Champions League outings too.
So, whilst he has 85 career Bundesliga appearances to his name, those aren't the kind of numbers that suggest he's a clear upgrade on Cairns.
