Orlando Gill update drops as San Lorenzo president clarifies truth on Leeds bid
The president of San Lorenzo has lifted the lid on the truth behind bids for Orlando Gill as Leeds United are said to have made one.
There has been plenty of movement in the goalkeeper department this summer for Leeds.
Alex Cairns agreed a deal to stay at Elland Road, while James Trafford has joined in a club-record transfer.
The future of Lucas Perri looks to be nearing a conclusion, as he departs on loan to Torino one year after signing.
With all that said, the Whites would need to replace the outgoing South American.
And it had seemed like they had sights on World Cup star Gill to be that replacement.
What is the truth behind Leeds bid for Orlando Gill?
Gill emerged as a World Cup hero with Paraguay, namely being the key factor in a penalty shootout win against Germany.
It was an unlikely victory for the South American nation, but one they will fondly remember.
Those performances in North America have caught the attention of other sides though, with Gill's future at San Lorenzo in question.
Reports out of Paraguay had suggested Leeds made a bid for Gill this summer window.
However, while the claims of an offer may have excited Leeds supporters, particularly those who had become familiar with him during the World Cup, San Lorenzo president Marcelo Culotta has contradicted those claims.
As shared by the print edition of Argentine newspaper, Ole, Culotta confirms that San Lorenzo "haven't received any firm offers."
Additionally, while he does state there have been interested parties in the Paraguayan, they have only "expressed" their admiration rather than make a formal approach.
He further clarifies the situation saying: "Some European clubs have expressed interest in buying 50%" of his rights."
Gill could still leave this window, with less than two weeks left for teams to get deals over the line in England.
And Culotta has kept Gill's future wide open stating: "There are still almost two weeks until the transfer window closes, we'll see if that interest materialises."
Why Leeds may not to make offer to sign Gill
While Culotta affirms no offer was made, Leeds may not even need to make one at all.
It has emerged that Gill has a release clause in his San Lorenzo deal, meaning the Whites can sign him by simply cutting through the red tape.
Negotations can be tough, especially for key players such as Gill.
So, the fact they could skip that completely may be appealing for the LS11 outfit.
Daniel Farke's side do still have time secure a new goalkeeper arrival with the window closing on 1 September.
But the clock is ticking down and they will not want to be left with only Trafford and Cairns.
