Leeds United transfer news: Newcastle United may need to pay off Karl Darlow as Bournemouth open £5m talks

Bournemouth are set to hold talks with Newcastle over a £5m deal for Karl Darlow on Wednesday as Leeds fall behind in the race for his signature, according to Alan Nixon.

Writing on his Patreon account (18 July) the newspaper journalist shared that the Premier League club are taking the lead in the race for Darlow, with Leeds also interested should Illan Meslier leave the club during the transfer window.

But with talks set to take place today over a deal, Nixon is reporting that Newcastle may be forced to pay portion of the goalkeeper’s wages to get him off the books with both Bournemouth and Leeds unlikely to match his current salary.

“Bournemouth are set for talks with keeper Karl Darlow on Wednesday about joining them from Newcastle in a £5 million deal,” he wrote.

“The Cherries want Darlow as competition for Brazilian Neto and will offer him Premier League football.

“Darlow also has interest from Leeds United who may give him a chance to play if they move out Ilian Meslier.

“Both clubs face a problem meeting the salary that Darlow is on at Newcastle and the Toon may have to pay him off with some money from the sale.”

Quick

Leeds have got the Ethan Ampadu transfer over the line quickly and with minimal fuss, which should give fans of the club some positivity about any future deals too.

It all happened quickly and behind the scenes without much noise in the mainstream media, and it’s possible the club have got things lined up already now that the takeover has been officially completed.

With Meslier’s future currently unresolved it’s clear that they don’t want to make any hasty decisions, but if Darlow is the man that they have earmarked as a replacement or as the new number one then they will need to work quickly to get a deal done.

Darlow would no doubt get more regular football at Elland Road than both Newcastle and Bournemouth, but he’ll likely need some convincing to drop down a division.

Bournemouth are making their interest concrete and now Leeds need to do the same otherwise they risk missing out on a prime target and having to start the hunt over from scratch.
