Leeds United look set to replace Sebastiaan Bornauw with Switzerland international Nico Elvedi.

The Borussia Monchengladbach star has been mooted with a switch to Elland Road for large parts of the summer.

However, with days before the Premier League season starts, the Whites have finally made their move with Bornauw poised to make a switch to Hamburg on loan.

An agreement has been reached with the Gladbach alongside that exit, with Elvedi flying in on Sunday night for his medical.

The Swiss-defender, if all goes smooth should be available for selection ahead of the Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest on 22 August.

With that move to Elland Road picking up plenty of praise within the footballing world.

Why Leeds' ambitions will be high after 2026 summer business

Leeds have not been the busiest side but the moves they have made have been exciting.

The deals for James Trafford, Tarik Muharemovic and Harry Wilson are all players that can instantly go into the starting line-up.

And Nico Elvedi could also fit into that category.

Sky Sports journalist Dougie Critchley has also been left widely impressed with the business at Elland Road.

Taking to his X account, he posted: "Some really, really smart deals being completed. Nico Elvedi for £6.8million is a sensational transfer from Leeds.

"Elvedi, Muharemovic, Trafford, Wilson... there aren't many clubs in Europe who have made as many immediate first team upgrades this summer."

As stated, the Whites have agreed to a £6.8m fee for Elvedi but it could rise to £8.5m due to add-ons.

Leeds will certainly be hoping those moves can take them to the next level. Trafford is a future England number one, while Wilson secured 17 goal contributions in the Premier League last season.

But the arrival of Elvedi will add an assuredness to the backline, with his 390 games of professional senior club football something not currently in LS11.

In Leeds' backline, there are not many who can attest to that number of appearances throughout their career.

And these upgrades will have Leeds' ambitions higher than last season's 14th place finish.

Why Leeds' summer business is set to shift

With Lucas Perri nearing an exit to Torino, the next transfer could be one that goes against their previous transfer dealings - a player for depth and not improvement to the starting lineup.

Perri's exit leaves Leeds light in the goalkeeper department with only Alex Cairns to deputise Trafford.

Additionally, Leeds do want to sign a striker and once more for a player as a back-up for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

So, while Leeds' first four signings could be established starters, the next few will likely be to provide competition and depth ahead of a long season.

It could be a busy end to the window yet for the Elland Road outfit.
