Why Leeds United will soon get clarity on Nico Elvedi transfer chance

Leeds United's interest in Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi could reach its final conclusion soon.

The Whites have been in the market for defensive reinforcements this summer and have already secured the arrival of Tarik Muharemovic.

The Bosnian, who is left-footed, has come in to replace the departed Pascal Struijk.

However, with Sebastiaan Bornauw not particularly well-favoured by Daniel Farke, the Whites could do with adding another central defender.

Especially if the German is going to continue to utilise a three-at-the-back formation next season

And while MOT Leeds News have previously shared reports of Leeds having an offer for Elvedi rejected, the situation in Germany seems to be reaching a crucial point.

What is the latest on Nico Elvedi's future?

Elvedi's contract situation has been heavily reported on so far, with his current deal expiring in 2027.

Gladbach do not want to miss out on a fee for the Swiss defender, who has become one of their most important players.

However, according the print edition of BILD Rheinland-Koln, the situation with the centre-back is now "critical" with just a month before the end of the window.

If the situation is not resolved soon, then the Bundesliga side will "effectively have to sell him."

Gladbach's sporting director Rouven Schroder is seemingly calm over the situation, though, with BILD quoting him as saying: "If a regular starter leaves us, we will replace him with another regular starter."

But they will want to give themselves time to locate and sign a replacement before allowing Elvedi to leave.

Why signs point to Leeds wanting another centre-back

Leeds have four centre-backs in their ranks already and that would be an acceptable number of central defenders should the LS11 side revert to a four-back.

In pre-season, the Whites did use a 4-4-2 against Wrexham, but constant reports in the media have been pointing to another addition.

Leeds wanted John Stones before his move to potential Inter Milan, and even when they were pushing ahead with a move for Muharemovic, they were keen on a right-footed defender.

Oumar Solet was heavily linked with the Whites in Italy, but Solet's knee issues had put Leeds off.

So, with both Stones and Solet off the table, Elvedi certainly remains a plausible acquisition, particulalry with this latest update.

And with Bornauw starting just five games in the Premier League last season, it is hard to see how Farke will now trust him.
