However, Tuttomercatoweb journalist Marco Conterio has reported this Thursday that the centre-back is in Milan ahead of signing a two-year deal worth £4million with Inter, ahead of Italian rivals Juventus, who were also keen.

BBC Sport previously highlighted how the Whites were in a possible battle with Juventus for a deal, but it appears Inter Milan have swooped in to win the race.

The Englishman is likely to be on high wages, perhaps even a salary that Paraag Marathe wanted to avoid, if he learned of the player's demands.
