Why Leeds United still hold advantage over Aston Villa for Zion Suzuki - but time is ticking
Leeds United may need to move fast if they are to make Zion Suzuki their first summer signing ahead of Aston Villa.
The Japan international has been strongly linked with a move to Elland Road over the past few weeks.
Leeds are willing to pay over £25m for Suzuki, who is said to be open to the move to West Yorkshire.
Leeds are not alone in their pursuit of the 23-year-old, with Aston Villa also showing an interest.
However, Juventus no longer seem to be looking at Suzuki in a positive development for Leeds.
While Leeds currently lead the way for the Asian keeper, though, that advantage may not last long amid a new update from abroad.
Why Leeds need to move this week for Zion Suzuki
Suzuki is currently away on holiday following Japan's exit from the World Cup exactly a week ago.
The Parma goalkeeper's reputation was only enhanced by his performances in North America.
Parma Live report that Suzuki will definitely be heading out of the Italian club this summer.
Leeds' advantage for Suzuki is down to Villa having to wait on developments out of their hands.
Ironically, given Juve's pursuit of Suzuki, the Serie A giants are hoping to sign Martinez from Villa.
That in turn would then see the Villans make their own move for Suzuki.
Argentina face Egypt in the last 16 of the World Cup on Tuesday, which is the earliest Martinez could head home.
Even if the holders stay in the tournament, as expected, the competition ends in under two weeks anyway.
Leeds therefore simply need to get a deal over the line for Suzuki now before their fellow Premier League side have a chance to make their own approach.
Suzuki deal is a priority for Leeds for more than one reason
Beyond potentially facing increased competition from elsewhere, there is also the small matter of Leeds lacking a number one goalkeeper.
Karl Darlow continues to deliberate over Leeds' contract offer, while Illan Meslier has officially left.
That leaves Lucas Perri, who failed to make a positive impact upon arriving 12 months ago.
The start of the season will be here before we know it, so it is imperative a new goalkeeper is signed soon.
And Suzuki, whose rise to prominence has been no surprise in the view of Urawa Reds goalkeeping coach Teruhisa Kudo, looks to be the only realistic option out there for the Whites.
