What Leeds United are now doing for James Trafford transfer as World Cup dream ends
James Trafford is a name that refuses to go away at Leeds United.
Currently at Manchester City, there is an expectation that he will move on this summer, but the rest is unknown.
Enzo Maresca is now head coach at the Etihad, and he will want to assess his squad after the World Cup.
Gianluigi Donnarumma is the undisputed number one, and there is a feeling that Trafford simply wants more.
That is where Leeds come into play.
With Karl Darlow moving to Manchester United and Illan Meslier now at Arsenal, the door is wide open for a number one at Elland Road.
When could Leeds United move for James Trafford?
England's World Cup will end on Saturday, in the third placed play-off against France.
Trafford will then have a small break, but transfer talk will dominate that as he looks at his next possible move to become a number one.
MOT Leeds News has also covered reports that Lucas Perri is a wanted man, with a new headline goalkeeper clearly needed.
Speaking on the Inside Elland Road Podcast, Graham Smyth shared what Leeds will be doing next with Trafford.
The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist believes he would be a "dream" signing, but it may be a waiting game.
"I think it's because they're waiting on Trafford," Smyth said.
"I think that Trafford's future will be decided now that the World Cup is over, and I think Leeds are waiting to get in a good position and get their elbows out to justle with others.
"They'll try and get him in, and I'll say again, dream signing if they can get it over the line. It would just tick so many boxes."
Lucas Perri plays critical role in James Trafford pursuit
The Brazilian will be staying in LS11, he simply has to.
And for now, Daniel Farke can promise Perri his number one spot, with the season nearly only one month away.
Leeds know that Perri can cut it at this level, without the mistakes, so they could play this long waiting game with Trafford.
Leeds don't need to rush into signing a new goalkeeper, given they signed Perri last summer and backed him then.
Should he keep things solid for pre-season and possibly the first couple of games, it gives Leeds chance to put things together and sign Trafford.
It will take a huge sum of money, wages and guarantees, but given the situation right now, it would be worth every penny.
