How much Leeds United will have to pay for competition-leading James Trafford
Leeds United could be set to firm up their long-touted transfer interest in James Trafford.
It's no secret to anyone around Elland Road that Leeds are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.
With Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow gone and Lucas Perri's long-term future in doubt as well, Leeds' shot-stopping department is in need of a major shakeup.
Trafford's name has been mentioned in connection with a move to Leeds for a number of months, despite only re-signing for Man City last summer in a deal worth £31million.
The 23-year-old was hoping to become City's number one goalkeeper last season, but the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma ensured that wouldn't be the case.
So, with Leeds' goalkeeping situation and Trafford sure to hold a desire for a starting role, a perfect transfer storm could forming.
Leeds would pay more for James Trafford than Tarik Muharemovic
MOT Leeds News has been staying every step of the way with Leeds' near club-record move for Tarik Muharemovic.
It's now widely being reported that the Whites will pay £34.1m to secure the services of the 23-year-old Sassuolo defender.
As a result, that would see him become Leeds' second most expensive signing in their history, just behind the £35.5m they spent on Georginio Rutter in January 2023.
However, that crown would go to Trafford if he is to move to Elland Road before this summer window shuts.
According to a report from The Mirror, Man City are demanding a fee of around £40m for Trafford.
Leeds are explicitly named in the report as being a team understood to hold interest in signing the keeper, with Newcastle, Tottenham and Aston Villa also credited with being keen.
So, whilst that is a lot of money to spend, Trafford did deliver strong evidence in 2025-26 as to why he's a foundational piece between the sticks in waiting for Leeds should they pull the transfer trigger.
Why Trafford has best Premier League goalkeeper claims
If you were to ask the average Premier League fan who is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League in 2025-26, very few, if any, would say Trafford.
He did only play four times in the league last term, but when you look at his per 90 minute numbers, his potential and ability is clear for all to see.
As per FotMob, no Premier League goalkeeper had a better goals prevented per 90 (0.63) or acted as a sweeper (2.00) more times than Trafford last season.
He also ranked in the top 12.8 percentile of his top-flight shot-stopping rivals for his 3.50 saves per game average, which is very impressive considering Man City aren't the easiest to get shots off against.
Meanwhile, no keeper kept more than his three clean sheets in last season's FA Cup proper, and he also saved the only penalty he faced as well as making zero errors leading to goals in six appearances.
Again, he led all goalkeepers for clean sheets in the Carabao Cup with four, made zero errors leading to goals and registered a superb 87.5 save percentage.
So, whilst it's true that £40m would be a record-setting investment for Leeds, if it guarantees them their goalkeeper of the future and takes away any concern at the position for the next decade or so, then surely it would be worth it.
