The valuable lesson Leeds United can learn from mega-money Morgan Rogers transfer
Leeds United will look on at envy at the money being spent by other Premier League teams, not least Chelsea with their move for Morgan Rogers.
The Whites spent £34.1million to recruit centre-back Tarik Muharemovic this week, but Harry Wilson is otherwise the only arrival on a free contract.
Leeds freed up funds with the £20m sale of Pascal Struijk to Brighton and Hove Albion, so just £14.1m net has been spent.
Elsewhere in the English top flight, Chelsea this week reportedly struck an agreement with Aston Villa to sign Rogers for a club-record £117m.
It goes without saying that is a ridiculous sum of money for a player who is very talented, but not exactly a world-beater.
Villa are not the only side set for a cash windfall, either, and lessons can be learned by Leeds.
Middlesbrough the big winners from latest Morgan Rogers move
Villa paid £15.5m to sign Rogers from Middlesbrough in January 2024, with that proving some shrewd business.
Not as shrewd as the work done by Boro, though, as they paid just over £1m for Rogers from Manchester City six months earlier.
More than that, the Championship side made sure to negotiate a sell-on clause in the agreement with Villa.
That means Boro will land 20 per cent of the Chelsea fee, which is £20.3m - so a £35m profit overall for a player they had for just six month.
Nobody in a million years expected Rogers to one day be sold for a nine-figure sum.
Even the £15m Villa paid for him seemed a little steep, for some context.
The lesson here is you never know a player's ceiling, especially when they are young, and so Leeds have to ensure similar sell-on clauses are inserted in all deals.
Could Leeds dream of a £100m sale of their own?
Assuming he passes his medical just fine, Rogers will become the second English player to swap Premier League clubs for a £100m-plus fee this summer.
Elliott Anderson is the other, having already joined Man City from Crystal Palace for £116m earlier this month.
It is fair to say Leeds do not have anyone in the squad right now that would attract that sort of money.
The closest to it, using Transfermarkt as a rough guide, would be Ethan Ampadu.
The Wales international is valued at £25.5m, though many will consider than a little on the low side.
Anton Stach (£23.8m) and Noah Okafor (£21.3m) are next on the list of more valuable players.
Thankfully for Leeds, there is no major need to sell right now and each of those players will remain at Elland Road beyond this summer.
