Leeds United are pushing forward with their interest in Southampton midfielder Shea Charles, but they may soon be faced with a problem.

The Whites are looking to add more names and strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026-2027 season.

Charles is a name that has been of interest to multiple sides in the Premier League, with both Everton and Manchester United previously being named.

The Northern Irishman impressed in the Championship for the Saints and he will have the personal confidence he is ready for the Premier League.

However, Daniel Farke could run into plenty of headaches with the arrival of Charles.

His addition would open a can of worms in terms of the make-up of the squad, while it goes completely against Leeds' recent transfer strategy.

The headache that Shea Charles will bring to Leeds United

When it comes to central midfielders, Leeds are already quite well stocked in that department.

Ethan Ampadu would assuredly be leading the side from the middle of the park, while Ao Tanaka came into his own in the second half of last season.

Anton Stach is also capable of playing in the midfield two, with last summer's signing Sean Longstaff, another player who can slot in.

Ilia Gruev is also still contracted to the LS11 outfit, so Charles would not be coming into solve an area of the pitch desperately lacking in names.

However, Leeds will believe that the 22-year-old is ready to improve on those options amid their interest.

But, even then, the profile of Charles is well off the beaten track of what has come to be expected of the West Yorkshire side.

The Whites have been targeting ready made players in the 24 to 26 years old age range and the Northern Irish international does not fit that mould.

Charles, while excelling in the second tier for Southampton, is still quite raw and it is not known if he can make that step up to the Premier League.

It would certainly be a headache for Farke on deciding his best midfield partnership.

How much will Charles cost Leeds?

As things stand, an official offer is yet to go in for the Southampton midfielder, but the Daily Mail have shared he is valued at over £20million.

At that price, you would expect Charles to come in with a starting role guaranteed at least at the beginning.

However, after Tanaka's resurgence this season, and Stach's quality, you cannot count it out that Charles at one point becomes a bench option.

But at the same time, it is not a terrible headache for Leeds to have.
