Leeds-linked Julian Brandt receives surprise enquiry as contact made
Leeds United have been pursuing an ambitious move for Julian Brandt this summer.
The Germany international is available on a free transfer as his Borussia Dortmund contract comes to an end in the next few days.
Leeds have been active in the market, and are closing in on the permanent signing of Harry Wilson with a medical due imminently.
Southampton midfielder Shea Charles is also firmly on Leeds' radar, though an initial £20million offer was rebuffed.
Brandt is one that appears more on the ambitious side as Champions League clubs are keeping tabs on him.
And it looks as though another club is hoping to muscle their way into the race, which is sure to be competition for Leeds.
European giants ask about Leeds target Julian Brandt
It is not surprising that Leeds are facing a fierce battle to bring Brandt to Elland Road.
That is not stopped the Leeds hierarchy from pressing ahead with their plans, as they look to take the next step in the Whites' journey.
According to German outlet WAZ, Brandt is now being tracked by Eerdivisie giants Ajax, who are looking to rebuild themselves after a fifth-place finish last season.
The report describes it as a surprising enquiry, and adds that Ajax have made contact with Brandt's entourage.
It adds that a move to the Dutch giants is considered unlikely at this stage due to his high salary demands.
Leeds' interest is named in the report, as is the fact that clubs in Italy and Spain are asking about his availability.
What system will Daniel Farke play at Leeds next season?
Leeds' strong end to the 2025/26 campaign was built on the back of Daniel Farke switching things up to a 3-5-2 system.
But given the Whites are close to bringing in Wilson, and are also tracking Brandt, it suggests a move back to a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system.
Both Wilson and Brandt play on the flanks or as an attacking midfielder, and it is difficult to see how they slot into a 3-5-2.
If Farke does persist with a formation that served him well last term, then it may be one of them plays off a lone striker, a position currently locked down by Dominic Calver-Lewin.
