Leeds handed Niko Sigur transfer boost as Hajduk Split manager confirms emotional exit

Niko Sigur is set to leave Hadjuk Split with Leeds United among the sides looking to sign him.

The Canadian has emerged as a midfield option for Daniel Farke's side with that being an area the Whites are looking to bolster.

Leeds are not alone in the race for the 22-year-old, though with Celtic, Coventry City, Toulouse and Valencia eyeing the midfielder.

It had been reported that Sigur would leave after Hadjuk Split's Conference League qualifiers.

However, that was not confirmed but with those fixtures now over movement could be seen with his future.

And their manager Gonzalo Garcia has provided the biggest hint yet to Sigur's next step.

Sigur has had an excellent week, helping Hadjuk Split qualify for the Conference League's league phase.

And he looks now to be heading for his next chapter as a football player this summer.

As shared by the Daily Record, Garcia has confirmed that Sigur is more than likely on this way out.

He stated: "We cried together in the dressing room with Niko Sigur. This is the best way for someone to leave. He was very emotional, along with Rokas Pukstas, because they are both probably leaving."

Sigur's next destination is not yet known but the Whites will certainly be keeping tabs on his situation.

It has been said that £4.2m would be enough to seal Sigur's transfer and in this current market, that could be a bargain for Farke.

How Sigur could solve two problems in one at Leeds

Sigur is a versatile footballer, who can play at both right-back and in defensive midfield.

Leeds already have James Justin and Jayden Bogle as right-back options but the former has been used at left wingback occassionally.

The arrival of Sigur could help the Whites solve their left-sided wingback or fullback issues in an unconventional way.

Sigur could be utilised as both a midfielder and the backup to Bogle, while Justin could be utilised as the second option to Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Of course, Farke would probably prefer to sign both a midfielder and a new wingback rather than solve the positions with one transfer.

But with little time left of the transfer window, when needs must, it may be a smart play for the Elland Road side.

So, it will be an interesting few days to see where Sigur does end up playing his football for the 2026-2027 campaign.
