Jesse Marsch has already told Leeds why they should sign Niko Sigur amid £4.2m transfer news

Leeds United have set their sights on a late summer move to sign Hajduk Split ace Niko Sigur.

Daniel Farke seems keen to continue bolstering his squad before the summer transfer window closes at 11pm next Tuesday.

He's already added Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic, James Trafford and Nico Elvedi to his squad, but is yet to spice up his midfield options since the end of last season.

Sigur, a 22-time Canada international who played at the World Cup, is now reportedly being looked into as a late option for the Yorkshire giants.

The versatile enforcer was left out of the Hajduk Split squad that beat NK Osijek 4-0 on Sunday amid increasing speculation surrounding his future in Croatia.

A bid has also been made for him ahead of next week's deadline.

How much has been offered for Niko Sigur

Spanish news outlet El Gol Digital reported on Monday that Leeds, Coventry, Celtic and Valencia are all keen on signing Sigur.

It is understood that Hadjuk Split want between £3.4million and £4.2m in order to sanction a sale.

Celtic have so far made an offer of £2.9m, which falls short of the Croatian club's requirements.

Wolves, Besiktas and Utrecht have all previously held an interest in Sigur, who plays at either right-back or in the defensive midfield position.

Former Leeds manager Carlos Corberan is reportedly pushing hard for Valencia to sign Sigur.

However, another ex-Leeds manager's opinion on Sigur is also relevant in the Yorkshire club's bid to sign the Canadian.

Why Jesse Marsch is such a big fan of Sigur

Leeds fans will shudder at the sight of that name, but Jesse Marsch has done a good job in charge of the Canadian national team.

Even though the Canadians were knocked out of the World Cup by Morocco in the last-16, Marsch was really impressed by Sigur's performance.

"I felt Sigur was exceptional, perhaps our best player on the pitch. The distance he covered, the decisions he made on the ball, the number of times he won possession in midfield, his vision in reading and creating plays, the ground he covered, the duels he won - he was outstanding in every aspect," said the American.

In November 2024, Marsch also said: "Niko Sigur, we know, has a big future. He’s savvy, clever…the way he catches the ball and delivers it is like a cultured Croatian. And I kind of made a comment, like, ‘that’s a Croatian pass!’ And he goes, ‘no, coach. It’s Canadian,’ And I was like, ‘right, it’s Canadian.'”

It'll be interesting if his relationship with Marsch has any sway on which club he joins.

However, right now, Leeds haven't made a concrete move for the Canadian utility man, meaning that a move somewhere else is looking more likely.
