Why Freddie Lane must be closing in on Leeds United debut as Under-21 exploits suggest
Daniel Farke will find it increasingly difficult to ignore Freddie Lane's form for Leeds United's Under-21s.
The 18-year-old has been at Thorp Arch for a number of years now, quietly turning heads as he's gone.
Despite his tender age, he's been playing Under-21s football since the 2024-25 season.
This July saw the versatile defender pen his first professional contract at Elland Road, inking a one-year deal.
Despite this, he's yet to make his first-team debut for the Whites, but he did come close in pre-season.
September has been a hugely fruitful month for him, however, and can only have moved him significantly closer to Farke's first-team plans.
What sort of form is Freddie Lane in for Leeds' U-21s?
Lane's and Leeds Under-21s' September began with a National League cup tie against Solihull Moors.
It ended in a 2-2 draw, with Lane scoring both of the Whites' goals that day whilst also completing 92 per cent of his passes, per FotMob.
Next up was a trip to Middlesbrough in Premier League 2, with this one ending in a crazy 4-4 draw.
Lane netted once and provided an assist, but unlike against Moors in which he operated on the left wing, Boro saw him deployed in central midfield.
He still found a way to deliver two successful crosses, as well as making five recoveries, four tackles and winning four ground duels.
Most recently, the U21s took on Newcastle on Saturday, with Leeds running out 2-0 winners over the Magpies.
Lane found the net for the third game in succession, this time from right midfield, and no player took more touches in the opposition box (six) than he did.
The teenager also completed 89 per cent of his passes, attempted five dribbles, made nine recoveries and won five ground duels.
So, where might Lane be soon pushing for first-team opportunities in Leeds' squad?
Farke could see win-win opportunity with Lane
One area of Leeds' side that has perhaps been underperforming slightly this season has been at their right wing position.
Harry Wilson hasn't hit the ground running at Elland Road, whilst Dan James isn't taking his chances to impress when they arrive.
As such, perhaps a change of plan in this department is needed after the international break.
Bringing Lane into the first-team fold here wouldn't just serve to reward his Under-21s exploits either.
The sight of an academy player being drafted in could really spark fear into the likes of Wilson and James.
It would be a clear message from Farke that they aren't doing enough and that their positions aren't guaranteed, which could cleverly elicit a big response.
