How Leeds United's Daniel Farke has got his wish amid new English football rule change

Daniel Farke will be buzzing about the latest football rule change amid his concerns at Leeds United last season.

Last season, the German was handed a one-game touchline ban after he approached referee Peter Bankes following a 1-0 loss against Manchester City at Elland Road.

It was a bit of a strange situation as it did not seem that Farke was confronting the official with much aggression.

In the 2025-2026 campaign, Man City had often got under the Leeds boss's skin.

There was another issue he faced at the Etihad in the reverse fixture.

However, now Farke's concerns look to have been addressed with a new rule coming into effect for next season.

What new rule is coming to English football and how does it affect Leeds?

Goalkeepers are quite protected in football.

That is often clear from set-pieces, with plenty of controversial decisions surrounding the man between the sticks.

The Whites themselves are quite involved in the goalkeeper department right now, with MOT Leeds News reporting on James Trafford's Leeds move inching closer.

However, upon his arrival a new rule will have to be followed by Leeds involving potential moments with Trafford next season.

As per BBC Sport's Dale Johnson, English football has decided to crack down on goalkeeper timeouts.

This means that when a goalkeeper receives treatment on the pitch, the manager will have to decide to keep one player out of the game for a total of one minute.

Coaches will only have 10 seconds to make their choice, and if they do not, it will be the captain who makes way.

This rule already exists for outfield players receiving treatment with goalkeepers previously exempt.

It allowed coaches to tactically tell their number one to hit the floor in order for a tactical timeout on the sidelines.

Back in November 2025, Leeds were on the receiving end of a well-executed timeout when Gianluigi Donnarumma went down, allowing Pep Guardiola to hand out new instructions with the game at 2-2.

The Citizens managed to turn the game around on the day in their favour with Phil Foden striking a 90th-minute goal, much to the frustration of Farke.

What Daniel Farke has said about goalkeeper time-wasting

Farke has been one of the more vocal managers when it comes to goalkeepers going down for a tactical timeout.

Following that aforementioned loss at the Etihad, the German claimed that Donnarumma was bending the rules of football.

As quoted by BBC Sport, the Whites boss said: "If we don't educate our players in football what to do in terms of fair play and sportsmanship and whatever and if we just try to bend the rules and even do a fake injury in order to do an additional team talk, it is not what I like personally."

Farke was also quoted on saying that the relevant authorities should find a solution to stop this issue.

Now, it appears that the German has got his wish ahead of the 2026-2027 campaign.
