Brenden Aaronson: World Cup campaign could have significant implications for Leeds United future

Brenden Aaronson will be hoping to play an important role for the United States of America at the 2026 World Cup after the Leeds United star was called up.

Aaronson can be a frustrating figure at times, with his performances often lacking inconsistency for the Whites.

However, this season, Daniel Farke has put a lot of trust into the 25-year-old, starting him in 30 Premier League matches throughout the season.

The American has been at the Yorkshire club for quite some time, first arriving in 2022 from Red Bull Salzburg on a five-year deal.

And now, ahead of Leeds’ second season back in the Premier League, a big decision will have to be made with those five years coming to an end.

How 2026 World Cup could affect Brenden Aaronson’s future at Leeds

When 2026-2027 comes around, Aaronson will have just one year left on his contract, which means if the Whites either decide to forego contract talks or if a deal cannot be agreed upon, they will be left with a decision to make.

With Aaronson heading to the World Cup, his performances for the United States of America in the home tournament could make a decision all the more easier.

If the Leeds star performs well and can artificially increase his value, a sale may be the best move for the LS11 outfit for the summer.

Paraag Marathe has already spoken about Leeds’ financial situation, with the Elland Road side unable to act as a top-flight club yet.

Even if he does not perform, a sale may be thought about either way, but a strong tournament would likely bring more suitors to the table.

What other Leeds players are entering their final year next season?

Alongside the American, there are plenty of other stars with futures up in the air heading into next season. Overall, the Whites have six contracts expiring in 2027.

Among those is captain Ethan Ampadu, who is likely to be involved in contract talks to keep him at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Joel Piroe, who is thought to be leaving this summer anyways, is in his final year. Pascal Struijk’s current deal also ends in 2027, while Ilia Gruev is the same.

Lukas Nmecha, who only joined in 2025, only signed a short-term deal with him, being available to leave on a free after the 2026-2027 season.

The Whites certainly have plenty of decisions to be making.
