Tottenham told to table bid for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier by Sky Sports pundit

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has urged Tottenham to make a bid for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

Lloris, 35, will enter the final year of his contract at Spurs next summer and Meslier, 22, has previously been linked with a move to North London to replace the France captain [Phil Hay, The Athletic].

Meslier is not currently with the Leeds squad in Spain due to illness while the Frenchman also missed out on the World Cup squad this winter in Qatar.

Robinson cannot believe that Meslier didn’t make Didier Deschamp’s squad ahead of some of the other options but believes the Leeds goalkeeper can still have a massive future both with France and, potentially, with Spurs.

“Leeds’ lack of depth in that department has been glaringly obvious for a long time and I don’t think it’ll be long before they’re tested with a big bid for Illan,” the former Leeds and Tottenham goalkeeper told MOT Leeds News.

I don’t for the life of me understand why he’s not in the French squad, how [Steve] Mandanda is in there ahead of him and [Alphonse] Areola, who doesn’t play [for West Ham].

For me, he should be in the France squad and he should be challenging Hugo Lloris.

From a Tottenham point of view, I’d love for them to test Leeds with a bid and try to sign him.

If Leeds were to ever lose Meslier, they’d have to go into the market to buy a new goalkeeper because there’s not enough strength in depth at all.”

Last October, The Athletic’s Hay said that it would take over £50million to pry Meslier away from Elland Road.

In other Leeds United news, a Premier League legend has made a move to sign this Leeds player ahead of January.
