Tottenham want to sign Leeds United ace Illan Meslier, 'loads' of interest - Phil Hay

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier is a target for lots of clubs, in particular Tottenham Hotspur, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay.

The French under-21 goalkeeper has been a key member of the Leeds squad since they were promoted to the Premier League, and has attracted the attention of teams like Manchester United according to reports.

But according to Hay, who was speaking on The Phil Hay Show [August 15], it’s Spurs who are showing the most interest in Meslier, and with Hugo Lloris being 35-years-old their goalkeeper situation is expected to change soon meaning Leeds could be forced to field interest.

“There is loads and loads of interest in Meslier,” he said. “I do feel like he’s going to be one of Leeds’ most important and probably best players this season.

“Tottenham are a side who are particularly interested in Meslier. And obviously, at some point the goalkeeping situation is going to change there.”

Oh no

Not another saga involving one of our best players leaving for another Premier League rival. That’s criminal.

Thankfully it doesn’t seem to be a situation that the club are going to have to deal with this summer, with Lloris still at Spurs as captain and the first-choice goalkeeper.

But next summer new questions could be asked with plenty of clubs on the scour for a top goalkeeper, and Meslier fits the description of a player who would fit in at a host of top clubs.

His distribution is excellent, he’s a great cross claimer and has excellent reflexes which can help him in one on one situations, something the top clubs face more often than not.

It would surely cost a big fee to get him out of Elland Road considering he signed a five-year deal last summer, but Spurs are owned by billionaire Joe Lewis and haven’t been afraid to splash the cash this summer for Antonio Conte. It’ll be a tough one to avoid, especially if Leeds don’t perform this season.
