Graeme Souness names Leeds United forward Rodrigo in Premier League team of the week

Graeme Souness has named Leeds United forward Rodrigo in his Premier League team of the week after hisgoal in the 2-2 draw with Southampton.

The Whites blew a 2-0 lead at St Mary’s to draw 2-2 with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team at the weekend, but Spanish international Rodrigo took his goal tally to three for the season with a fine first half strike.

That was enough for him to earn a place in the team of the week for Souness, who told talkSPORT his XI for the best performers of the weekend.

Rodrigo was joined in the team by Nick Pope, Reece James, Kalidou Koulibaly, Joao Cancelo, Phil Foden, Mathias Jensen, John McGinn, Kevin De Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus and Ivan Toney.

Leeds take on Chelsea at Elland Road next Sunday and will hoping to maintain their unbeaten start to the season against their fierce rivals.

Key man

When Jesse Marsch arrived at the club, there were serious question marks about whether Rodrigo would be able to play in the new style that Leeds were looking to bring in.

But he’s become a key cog in the machine for Marsch with his pressing from the front and his goal threat, something many didn’t expect.

When he signed as the club’s record signing at the time the expectation was high and he failed to live up to it initially, but he has really stepped up since the sale of Raphinha as the main man in attack.

His goals are obviously a huge help to a team that has worried about potentially struggling with scoring after their problems last season, but with three goals in two games he has lessened those fears.

If he can continue his great form heading into Elland Road next week when Leeds face off with Chelsea, then the fans will be absolutely delighted with their chances of earning some points from the game.

In other Leeds news, the club want to sign this Italy international in a £4.2m deal before August 25th
