DC United have made an approach to sign Leeds United midfielder Mateusz Klich in January, according to Polish reporter Piotr Koźmiński.
The SportoweFakty journalist claimed on Thursday (8 December) that a number of MLS sides are keen on signing the 32-year-old midfielder, who scored a stunning winner for Leeds in a 2-1 friendly win over Elche.
DC United are managed by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney and he’s keen on signing Klich while Belgian club Royal Antwerp are also in pursuit of the Poland international.
“One option for Klich is to leave Europe,” Koźmiński said on the SportowFakty website. “From what we hear, the player is attracting interest from several MLS teams. DC United is asking about him the most intensely. Wayne Rooney is the coach there, and in the regular season the club finished last, fourteenth in the Eastern Conference.
“According to WP SportoweFakty, the 32-year-old Klich also has the option of staying in Europe, because Royal Antwerp, currently the third team of the Belgian top league, is interested in his services. Here, too, Klich would have to deal with a well-known trainer, because Mark van Bommel sits on the coaching bench of this club .
“Although the former Cracovia player has a contract with Leeds until the summer of 2024, there are many indications that it will not be fulfilled. As we hear, leaving in winter is likely.”
Let him choose
Klich has been at Leeds long enough and done so much for the club that he deserves the right to choose if he wants to leave Elland Road or stay until at least the summer.
DC United seems like quite an exciting opportunity.
Although they’re not the best team in the MLS having finished bottom of the Easter Conference in 2022, they have a good manager in charge in Rooney and a move to Washington DC could be a good opportunity for Klich and his family.
If he doesn’t want to move too far from home then Antwerp is also an option.
Antwerp are third in the Belgian First Division as it stands.
They’re nowhere near first with the title already seeming to be in Genk’s hands this season but still, Antwerp could offer European football to Klich next season should he go there.
And he could opt to stay at Leeds.
He’s not starting games anymore in the Premier League but he’s still a valuable member of Jesse Marsch’s squad with that goal against Elche on Thursday showing that he’s still capable of producing something spectacular.
