Why Lucas Perri's Torino transfer truth has changed from 'days away' Leeds United exit

Lucas Perri may not be as close to leaving Leeds United as previously thought.

It's been widely expected that the 28-year-old goalkeeper would leave Leeds this summer, after a hugely underwhelming debut 2025-26 campaign.

That is likely to remain the case for the Brazilian, especially after James Trafford completed his club-record transfer to Elland Road this week.

Serie A outfit Torino have been strongly linked with signing Perri in recent days, and reports out of Italy on Friday had claimed that a deal was almost done.

Torino manager Ignazio Abate is known to be looking for a new goalkeeper this summer, after their 26-year-old shot-stopper Franco Israel is set to miss several months as he recovers from shoulder surgery.

However, a fresh twist has now emerged in this transfer saga that threatens to derail his switch to Turin.

What is holding up Lucas Perri's transfer to Torino?

As claimed in a report from Torino-specific news outlet CuoreToro on Friday, they stated that Perri will sign for Torino on an initial loan deal with an option to purchase him for a fee of around £9.4million.

That same report also claimed that Perri was expected in Turin in a matter of days in order to complete his medical, before inking his signature on the dotted line.

But, a new report from Leeds Live somewhat conflicts these claims coming out of Italy.

They write that Perri's switch to Torino has now been paused as he recovers from a quad injury, and it's unclear how long he will need before he's back to full fitness.

Leeds Live do, however, reaffirm that Torino have got a loan deal including the purchase option lined up for Perri, and remain hopeful of completing a deal for him this summer.

So, with Torino desperately needing to find a new starting goalkeeper before their season starts later this month, Perri, depending on how much time his recovery requires, could move to alternative options.

If Perri is unable to get a move away from Leeds this summer, do his numbers from 2025-26 actually paint a more positive picture regarding a backup role than some may think?

How did Perri's numbers rank amongst Premier League rivals?

Now that Daniel Farke has his number one of the future in Trafford, he may yet be holding on to Perri as his backup for the time being.

The ex-Lyon keeper played 16 times in the Premier League for the Whites last season, conceding 29 goals and keeping just three clean sheets.

Those numbers don't make for great reading, and unfortunately for Perri, it doesn't get better for him the further you look at his underlying production from last term.

As per FotMob, his 56.7 per cent save percentage ranked in the lowest 10.3 percentile of all Premier League goalkeepers in 2025-26.

On top of that, his -2.18 goals prevented placed him in the bottom 28.2 per cent, whilst his 53.6 per cent passing accuracy ranked in the lowest 7.7 percentile.

Perri also failed to save any of the four penalties he faced, but he did actually make zero direct errors leading to goals.

Despite that, there's very little evidence here to suggest he's even a safe enough option as Leeds' number two if it comes down to that, and so perhaps Farke still has more shot-stopping recruitment to do this summer.
