Why Leeds United will be squirming amid Crysencio Summerville latest at West Ham
Leeds United look set to pay for a costly oversight on Crysencio Summerville as he approaches the West Ham exit door.
The Netherlands international spent four years at Elland Road prior to joining West Ham in 2024.
Summerville starred in his final campaign in West Yorkshire with 21 goals and 10 assists in 49 appearances.
That earned Leeds a respectable £25million fee, but Summerville is set to leave West Ham for a fair bit more than that.
That is amid reports emerging on Sunday evening regarding the West Ham winger.
Unfortunately for Leeds, they do not stand to benefit in any way.
Leeds sell-on clause oversight comes back to haunt them
Summerville was always likely to leave West Ham this summer following the Hammers' relegation to the Championship.
Widespread reports on Sunday suggest Roma, having had one bid rejected, are set to return with an improved offer.
The first bid was reported to be around £34m, so anything north of that will now be tabled.
Had Leeds inserted a sell-on clause in Summerville's agreement with West Ham, they would have profited nicely from that.
However, it has previously been reported that Leeds do not have such an agreement in place.
How much could Leeds have earned from Summerville's West Ham exit?
MOT Leeds News reported on Sunday how Middlesbrough will land £20.3m from Morgan Rogers' sale to Chelsea.
That puts into context how important it is to think ahead and include such a clause in any transfers
Leeds did so with Charlie Cresswell and that will bring in a welcome seven-figure payment should the defender leave Toulouse this summer, as expected.
But it was not the case with Summerville, so any hopes of a windfall are out the window.
Should Summerville leave West Ham for £40m, say, and Leeds had a 15 per cent sell-on clause, that would have been £6m.
That may not sound like a huge amount in the current market, but it is an extra £6m towards bringing in a marquee player.
Hopefully lessons are learned and sell-on clauses are always factored into future sales.
