Why 'indispensable' Petar Sucic may just take Leeds United's midfield to whole new level

Leeds United could further enhance their midfield in one swoop amid the latest regarding a move for Inter Milan midfielder Petar Sucic.

Leeds are now on the verge of signing James Trafford from Manchester City, adding to the arrivals of Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic.

Even accounting for the exits of Pascal Struijk, Karl Darlow and others, Leeds are now stronger in multiple positions.

Central midfield has so far been overlooked, but that could soon be about to change.

MOT Leeds News carried reports on Tuesday that Sucic is a player on Leeds' transfer radar.

While a move is nowhere near advanced, it is a deal that would make total sense from the Whites' perspective.

Exactly what would Petar Sucic bring to Leeds' midfield?

First and foremost, Inter are not looking to sell Sucic this summer and would only be open to mammoth offers for the 22-year-old.

That is understandable given the strides he has taken in his 12 months at San Siro, having arrived from Dinamo Zagreb in a £12million deal.

Sucic ticks every key box Daniel Farke will be looking for in a central midfielder.

The 21-cap Croatia international is known for his physical nature and high work rate, while also being able to slot into various central-midfield positions.

Whether it is as a holding midfielder, a box-to-box midfielder or a pure out-and-out central midfielder, Sucic really can do a bit of everything.

It says a lot that Sucic is already a regular for his country at such a young age, where he has got the chance to learn from one of the greats in Luka Modric.

Speaking earlier this year, Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic hailed Sucic as "indispensable" to the side.

Dalic added: "He has excellent athletic qualities. He's tenacious, has character and quality. His work has produced the desired results."

Former Italy player turned pundit Daniele Adani, meanwhile, said Sucic is a "midfielder who understands football".

The obvious question in all this, however, is where would Sucic slot into Farke's strongest XI?

Leeds' central midfield performed well last season, explaining why that is the last area to have been strengthened - if indeed it is.

Shea Charles is a long-term target for Leeds, but that ship appears to have sailed for now.

The most obvious call for Farke to make is to partner Sucic with Ethan Ampadu in the engine room.

Farke then has a choice between Sean Longstaff, Ao Tanaka, Ilia Gruev and Anton Stach as to who else slots into midfield.

It may sound greedy - and spending wisely has to take priority - but if funds can be freed up to make Sucic the final signing this summer, it has to happen.
