Dan James faces a crucial season ahead at Leeds United.

Injuries hampered the winger's 2025-26 campaign as he was unable to cement his place in Daniel Farke's starting lineup.

The Whites secured Premier League safety without the Wales international's contribution for the most part.

James has come back into the fold during Leeds' pre-season tour in America, starting against Wrexham and Sunderland.

The 28-year-old started and played 75 minutes against Y Dreigiau, while he came on as a half-time substitute in the 1-0 win over the Black Cats.

While the Welshman had his moments in the 3-2 loss to Wrexham, his display at the Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey against Sunderland should raise some concerns.

How Dan James may be feeling about new Leeds United season

MOT Leeds News followed James' fitness concerns at Elland Road last season.

The Wales international seems like a shadow of the player who recorded 21 goal contributions to help the Whites win promotion.

Speaking about James in March 2025, Farke said, "Daniel is an outstanding player, special with his skills, but what has at least the same importance is his personality - he is an unbelievable, great lad, a great team-mate, always thinking about the team - also works his socks off."

Now it feels more and more like the attacker is playing himself out of the German manager's plans.

The winger wasn't at his best against Sunderland, shooting straight at the goalkeeper when presented with an opportunity to score in the 78th minute.

Harry Wilson hasn't necessarily made headlines with his displays during the US tour, but the former Fulham star looks like the preferred candidate to be Farke's first-choice right-winger.

Dan James' future assessed at Elland Road

James could potentially be at a pivotal moment in his career where he may have to make a difficult decision at Leeds.

Looking at the winger's lack of minutes over the last few months, it's safe to say he has a mountain to climb to get back into Farke's good graces.

Now that Wilson has signed for the West Yorkshire outfit, his Welsh compatriot faces increased competition for minutes at Elland Road.

It wouldn't be surprising to see James look for pastures new as he contemplates his future at the Peacocks.

The attacker has been a great servant in LS11, but it may be time for him to move on.
