The shirt numbers available to Tarik Muharemovic as Leeds United deal nears

Published on

Tarik Muharemovic looks set to become Leeds United's second signing of the summer transfer window.

Following the belated confirmation of Harry Wilson's arrival as a free agent last week, Muharemovic is about to follow.

MOT Leeds News reported the latest on Wednesday morning, with Muharemovic set to undergo a medical with Leeds.

Personal terms also have to be agreed, but they are not expected to be an obstacle at this stage.

Leeds are expected to be paying just north of £34million, making the centre-back the West Yorkshire side's second-most expensive signing ever.

Assuming the deal goes through with no hitches, there is one obvious shirt number available to Muharemovic.

Tarik Muharemovic's squad number history

Muharemovic has worn the number 80 shirt in his two seasons at Sassuolo, with whom he has made 63 appearances.

That is a rather unorthodox number for a first-team regular, regardless of the position.

This is not down to superstition or the number being particularly special to the defender.

Instead, it was one of the numbers available when he arrived as a relatively-unknown player in 2024 and he has stuck with it.

Muharemovic also previously sported the number 44 jersey at Juventus, albeit he did not make a first-team appearance for the Old Lady.

What numbers are available at Leeds for Muharemovic?

Assuming Muharemovic does not hold No.80 close to his heart, he will surely take a more traditional number at Elland Road.

The most obvious choice is the number five shirt left behind by Pascal Struijk, whom he is practically replacing in West Yorkshire.

Prior to Struijk, Charlie Cresswell was number five at Elland Road in 2023-24, while Robin Koch wore that number between 2020 and 2023.

Ben White, Matthew Pennington and Kyle Bartley are others to have done so in the past decade.

The next number available as things stand is 12, while 13 - unlucky for some - 16, 17 and 20 are also free.

Everything therefore points towards Muharemovic being Leeds' number five - hopefully for a number of years to come.
