The full finances behind James Trafford transfer as Leeds United announcement imminent

Leeds United are on the verge of announcing the signing of James Trafford from Manchester City.

Leeds emerged as the frontrunners for Trafford's signature last week, with Newcastle United withdrawing their interest.

A number of updates have emerged in the week since that initial news, but there has been nothing official as of yet.

However, everything is now effectively in place for the England international to put pen to paper at Elland Road.

That is amid a new update from David Ornstein on Monday evening.

That includes news on how much Leeds are set to pay City for the shot-stopper.

How much are Leeds paying for James Trafford?

MOT Leeds News has reported extensively on Leeds' big-money move for Trafford.

It now appears the next update will simply be official confirmation from both Leeds and City of a deal being struck.

Ornstein reported via The Athletic on Monday that Leeds are signing Trafford for £40million, plus bonuses.

The deal "is in the process of being finalised".

Trafford would therefore become Leeds' record signing, surpassing the £35.5million paid to sign Georginio Rutter in January 2023.

The 23-year-old, previously hailed "outstanding" by England Under-21s boss Lee Carsley, would become Leeds' third signing of the summer.

While his playing time has been limited at the Etihad Stadium, Trafford is considered England's number one keeper for years to come once Jordan Pickford is ushered out.

Harry Wilson has arrived on a free following his Fulham exit, while Tarik Muharemovic has joined from Sassuolo for £34.1m.

What could be next for Leeds after Trafford deal?

Leeds fans have every right to be excited for the start of the new season once this third deal is over the line.

Daniel Farke's side have strengthened in goal, arguably strengthened at centre-back and also in attack.

That is not to say Leeds' business will be finished there, though.

A new striker could also be on the agenda, with reports emerging on Monday that Levante's Carlos Espi is wanted by Leeds.

If the Whites can get that deal done, there is no reason why last season's 14th-placed finish cannot be bettered.
