Leeds must sign Zion Suzuki, the history-making star who won year's supply of biscuits
Leeds United have been linked with signing Zion Suzuki, with the Japanese goalkeeper enjoying quite the rise in recent years.
With Karl Darlow out of contract, Illan Meslier confirmed to be leaving this summer and Lucas Perri underwhelming in his debut season, Leeds need a new goalkeeper this summer.
Daniel Farke is constructing a very exciting squad for the future, but that could be undone if he can't find a reliable and long-term pair of hands between the sticks.
Zion Suzuki has reportedly emerged on Leeds' radar, with the 23-year-old currently starring at the World Cup with Japan.
With the Japanese drawing with the Netherlands in their opening group stage game, they now look well placed to go and take results from Tunisia and Sweden respectively to reach the knockout rounds.
That could complicate a potential deal getting done, but the Whites should be making signing the Parma star their number one transfer priority right now.
How did Zion Suzuki play in 2025-26 for Parma?
Having joined Parma in the summer of 2024 from Belgian side St.Truiden, Suzuki has quickly emerged as one of the brightest young goalkeepers in Serie A.
Starting all 37 of his Serie A appearances in his debut 2024-25 campaign, he immediately established himself as their clear number one in goal.
The New Jersey-born keeper was forced to miss almost four months through injury last season, but started every single one of his 20 league outings.
As per FotMob, Suzuki ranked in the top 11.9 percentile of Serie A shot-stoppers in 2025-26 with his 1.45 high claims per 90 minutes.
Meanwhile, he also placed well above average for his 3.30 saves, 0.60 times acted as a sweeper and eight accurate long balls per game averages respectively.
In a Parma side that finished 13th last season, he still averaged a 70.2 save percentage, made just the one error leading to a goal and saved a penalty to boot.
Rewinding to their 2024-25 campaign, in which Parma only just escaped relegation in 16th, no Serie A goalkeeper made more high claims than Suzuki's 64 that term.
On top of that, he also made zero errors leading to goals, made 100 saves, played 829 successful passes and ranked in the top 6.8 per cent of his positional rivals with 250 accurate long balls.
How Suzuki won a year's supply of biscuits in Japan
Suzuki is an ascending young goalkeeper who clearly has star potential for the future, and Leeds may well find their long-term goalkeeping solution if he moves to Elland Road.
He also has a fascinating story to tell, as despite being born in Newark, New Jersey in the United States, his family moved to Japan whilst he was still young - his mother's homeland.
They settled in Urawa, where Suzuki took up football over there, and soon joined Urawa Red Diamonds' academy system.
Upon signing his first professional contract with them aged just 16 years and five months old, he became Urawa Red Diamonds' youngest ever player to sign a professional contract in their history.
Fast-forward to October 2021, and Suzuki became only the second ever goalkeeper to win the J.League Cup New Hero Award.
The award is given to an under-23 player who made the largest contribution to their team in the competition, and Suzuki's prize for winning the honour was quite something.
As detailed in a report from the J.League website at the time, Suzuki took home 500,000 yen (approximately £2,340), a crystal ornament and a year's supply of Yamazaki biscuits.
That sounds good to me!
