Leeds enquire about Lanus midfielder Tomas Belmonte
Leeds United have approached Lanus with an enquiry about midfielder Tomas Belmonte, according to ESPN journalist Jorge Baravalle.
Writing via his personal Twitter account on Saturday, the Argentinean journalist reported that Leeds asked Lanus for what “conditions” it would take to sign 23-year-old Belmonte.
It is understood the Argentinean club wants around £6.4million for the versatile midfielder, who can play in defensive, central and attacking roles and is also wanted by teams in Turkey and Italy.
Does he fit the bill?
Belmonte is unlikely to be a player who many Leeds fans will have heard of until he was linked with a move to Elland Road.
The 23-year-old is a versatile central midfielder who does, on the surface, tick a lot of boxes for the Whites.
Marcelo Bielsa loves a versatile player – there’s no denying that – and it has already been reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post that director of football Victor Orta is in talks to sign an unnamed central midfielder.
Is Belmonte that player?
Right now, the link seems tenuous.
We’ve seen Leeds linked with a number of Argentinean players in the last couple of years but how many fellow Argentines has Bielsa actually signed? That’s right – zero.
Belmonte sounds like good value but we’ll wait to see if there are some sources within the UK who say anything first before getting excited about his potential arrival in West Yorkshire.
Leeds do need to add to their central midfield options. It wouldn’t be bad to get a back-up for Kalvin Phillips while we could also do with someone who’s a long-term replacement for Mateusz Klich.
Let’s hope we see some more fresh faces in the next week or two.
In other Leeds United news, this player has been left with no option but to quit Elland Road.
