Leif Davis left with no option but to quit Leeds United after Junior Firpo signing
Junior Firpo’s arrival at Leeds United has been positively received but the left-back’s move from Barcelona to Elland Road is bound to have a negative impact on Leif Davis.
Before Firpo, 24, was signed earlier this week for around £13million, 21-year-old Davis was the only out-and-out left-back at Elland Road.
Marcelo Bielsa played the now-departed Ezgjan Alioski at left-back last season despite him being naturally a winger while Stuart Dallas was also used there.
But Bielsa consistently overlooked Davis and only played the Newcastle-born full-back three times in all competitions.
Davis, who was signed from Morecambe in 2018, came off the bench in Premier League matches against Manchester City and Manchester United while his only senior start of the campaign was in the regrettable defeat to Crawley in the FA Cup.
Did Davis stand out in any of those matches? Not really. But we didn’t expect him to against Man United and Man City. We did, however, want to see more from him in the shock defeat at Crawley.
Firpo’s arrival at Elland Road spells bad news for Davis, who has played just 14 times in senior football in his entire career despite the fact he’ll turn 22 by the end of this year.
He hasn’t been loaned out, he hasn’t been a regular for Bielsa. He’s been a bench-warmer at best having been an unused substitute 23 times in the Premier League last term.
It’s surely time for Davis to start considering his future at Elland Road.
We don’t want to see good young talent go to waste and if Davis stays and plays second or third fiddle in the left-back position next season, he’ll have his development stunted for yet another year.
Davis is in the last two years of his contract so there’s no rush to sell him but it might make sense for all parties if the left-back moves on this summer.
In other Leeds United news, this club is in talks to sign four Leeds players.
