Leeds at centre of 'crazy transfer turmoil' as Michael Zetterer agent gives bombshell interview
Leeds United will not be signing Michael Zetterer from Eintracht Frankfurt after all.
A move for the 31-year-old appeared to be set to go through as Leeds look to bring in a new back-up goalkeeper.
Zetterer is vastly experienced, having made well over 100 Bundesliga appearances in his career.
The former Germany Under-21s international's arrival was then set to finally give Lucas Perri the green light to join Torino.
However, Zetterer will not be making the move to West Yorkshire if quotes from his representative are anything to go by.
And that could spell very bad news for Daniel Farke, with less than two weeks to go until the transfer window shuts.
Michael Zetterer agent 'surprised' at Leeds reports
It was reported on Thursday that a deal for Leeds to sign Zetterer was very close.
It looked like being yet another shrewd piece of business from the Whites this window.
James Trafford has been signed to be first choice for years to come, with Zetterer then a more-than-able deputy for the next couple of years.
However, the goalkeeper's agent Nico Pellatz has poured cold water on a deal going through this window.
"We are very surprised by reports that Michael Zetterer is on the verge of a transfer," he told German outlet Bild, who label the saga as "crazy" and outline how it has caused "turmoil".
"These are simply not true. Michael and his family are very happy in Frankfurt. A move is currently out of the question for him."
So that's that, then. Assuming Zetterer's agent has not spoken out of turn, which he presumably would not, a move to Leeds is not happening.
Quite how it went from a deal being close to completion, to a deal never being on the cards, is anyone's guess.
The real reason will no doubt emerge with time, but it now leaves Leeds scrambling for another option.
Who will Leeds turn to as James Trafford back-up?
Leeds have certainly been linked with their fare share of goalkeepers this window.
That was mainly prior to a deal with Trafford being agreed.
It has been widely accepted that Perri would be replaced, though, meaning the links with some lesser names have continued.
But with the options dwindling, and time running out, could it be that Perri now stays at Elland Road?
Farke cannot afford to be left with Alex Cairns as his back-up goalkeeper until the winter transfer window.
All it takes is an injury to Trafford, or even a three-game suspension, and Leeds' season could begin to unravel.
Selfishly, Perri needs to be told he is staying for at least another four months.
That is unless there is another option Leeds can turn to between now and the deadline on 1 September.
