Isaac Schmidt popularity shows as Calvert-Lewin and others react to Leeds farewell
Isaac Schmidt hardly leaves behind the most storied of Leeds United legacies.
Leeds confirmed on Thursday that the Switzerland international has returned to his home country with Young Boys.
MOT Leeds News has already reported that Leeds will receive £2million for Schmidt.
That is around £500,000 below what Leeds paid to sign the full-back from St Gallen in 2024, so no damage has been done on that front.
Schmidt ultimately failed to convince Daniel Farke of his abilities at the back in Leeds' title-winning campaign, being used further forward.
He then spent last season on loan with Werder Bremen. But despite his lack of impact at Elland Road, he was clearly a popular figure.
What has Isaac Schmidt had to say to Leeds fans?
Schmidt played just 14 times for Leeds, with only two of those coming from the start - and none in the league.
Still, he leaves with the best wishes of everyone connected to the Whites.
In a message posted on his personal Instagram account on Thursday, Schmidt thanked the Leeds fanbase for their support.
"Dear Leeds United, teammates and staff," he wrote. "I will never forget those moments of pure emotions we had together, great team spirit on and off the pitch, with our unbelievable fans.
"I wish you all the best for the future. You will always be remembered. MOT."
The post was 'liked' by countless Leeds teammates both past and present, including the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Harry Gray, Pascal Struijk.
Joel Piroe commented: "Good luck, brother."
Wilfried Gnonto, who himself faces an uncertain Leeds future, posted "Mon Gars", which translates to My Guy.
Schmidt's popularity is clear, but his impact at Elland Road less so.
Schmidt 'legacy' summed up by telling stat
It was clear Schmidt had no future at Elland Road after struggling to make an impact in his maiden campaign.
As per Opta statistician Jonny Cooper, Schmidt departs Leeds having not made a league start.
Only Josuha Guilavogui has made more appearances for Leeds (14) than Schmidt's 12 without starting a league game.
Schmidt will now get the chance to rebuild his career in Switzerland before potentially returning to one of Europe's top leagues down the line.
Just don't expect that to be at Leeds.
