Sunderland are looking to win the transfer race for Ian Poveda after his contract at Leeds United expired this summer, according to The Northern Echo.

The outlet reported on its website on Tuesday (23 July) that the Black Cats are eager to beat several Championship clubs to the winger's signature having made him a leading transfer target.

Sheffield Wednesday are eager to re-sign the 24-year-old after he spent part of last season on loan at Hillsborough, while West Brom, Cardiff City and Luton Town are believed to be keen on his services [Darren Whitcoop, 8 June].

Has anyone signed Ian Poveda after summer Leeds United exit?

Leeds United supporters will be keeping an eye on where Poveda ends up this summer, even if it doesn't particularly matter to them now that his Elland Road exit has long been confirmed.

The winger never managed to have the impact most expected during his time in Yorkshire and for one reason or another could never hold down a regular place in the starting XI under a string of different managers.

He clearly has the ability to be a consistent player in the Championship and that was shown during his time at Hillsborough last year and maybe he will be able to rediscover that form if he makes the move to the Stadium of Light.

But with the likes of Crysencio Summerville, Wilfried Gnonto and Dan James all vying for a starting place under Daniel Farke this season, Poveda's minutes were going to be limited once again even if he had managed to earn a new contract.

Hopefully, he goes on to be a success wherever he ends up this summer, but it seems unlikely that the Whites will regret letting him leave for nothing.
