How Max Wober can help accelerate next Leeds United deal as medical underway in Austria
Leeds United appear to be on the verge of getting Max Wober off their books for good.
Wober has spent two of the past three seasons out on loan away from Elland Road.
The centre-back most recently had a year at Werder Bremen, but he made just three appearances last season in all competitions.
Injuries have curtailed Wober's playing time, but that has not stopped Schalke from making a move.
The 28-year-old has another year to run on his big-money Leeds contract, but the Whites may not be able to free up those funds.
That is amid a new update that is emerging out of Germany on Wednesday morning.
Max Wober medical update as Leeds exit nears
MOT Leeds News reported earlier on Wednesday that Wober is not part of Leeds' travelling party for their USA tour.
That all but confirmed the Austria international has no future in West Yorkshire, and so that has proved.
Ruhr 24 report that Wober is undergoing a medical in Innsbruck, where Schalke are training, ahead of completing a move.
Wober is said to be going an intense check, more than likely due to his beleaguered recent injury history.
Should the defender pass the checks, as is still expected, he will get the green light to leave Leeds.
The report does not state whether Leeds will receive a fee for Wober, or if they are simply happy to get his high wages off their books.
How much will Leeds free up from Wober sale?
Capology report that Wober is on around £35,000 per week at Leeds - or around £2.3m a year gross with other clauses factored in.
That is a massive sum for a player who is not wanted at Elland Road.
Leeds would ideally land a fee for a player who, for all his injuries, does boast plenty of experience in the Bundesliga.
However, if it is just a case of Leeds freeing up multi millions in wages alone, that would also be handy.
James Trafford and Shea Charles remain top targets for Leeds, as does free agent Julian Brandt, and Leeds may now be in a position to push ahead with certain deals.
Much more was expected of Wober at Leeds, but thankfully it looks as though a line can be drawn under this chapter and everyone can move on.
