How Leeds United can still beat Sunderland to against-the-clock Igor Paixao transfer after update
Leeds United's chase to sign Igor Paixao could go down to the wire.
The Whites are looking to add two more attackers to their squad ahead of Tuesday's deadline, with a winger and striker wanted at Elland Road.
RB Leipzig's Conrad Harder appears to be the leading target to give Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin competition up top, with a £13million deal mooted.
But Leeds' interest in Paixao has been well-documented for several weeks now, and doubts have recently crept in after Sunderland's approach.
The Black Cats have moved ahead of the pack to sign the Brazilian, with just mere days left in the window.
However, Sunderland may only be doing the dirty work for Leeds to nip in at the back post and secure a deal.
How Leeds may still have Igor Paixao hope
Leeds have been linked with signing Paixao all through August, with Marseille needing to sell players in order to raise funds.
However, the French side have remained firm on their value of the left-winger, who registered 18 goals and assists last term.
According to L'Equipe, Marseille rejected an offer worth over £20million for Paixao this week.
However, the Ligue 1 side continue to "sound out" their demands to the market, with several English clubs and other sides overseas interested.
Marseille have received multiple offers, but Sunderland remain in pole position for the 26-year-old.
As it stands, Leeds are still in with a shot of signing Paixao, but they could be waiting to see what type of offer Sunderland can see accepted for the forward.
After all, the player will be fully aware that the Whites will want him too.
Why Paixao's smile has been 'missing' amid transfer talk
It's said that Paixao's smile has been "missing" in training in recent days.
The Marseille star has been suffering with muscle pain over the last week, and took part in training on Thursday, only to feel a new issue.
His injury will be assessed over the weekend, but the player remains open to a move.
Marseille want to sell Paixao, despite the wishes of head coach Bruno Genesio, and Leeds may try for a late deal if they feel the finances are there for them to reach an agreement.
