How Jayden Lienou announcement elsewhere asks Leeds United transfer question
Jayden Lienou remains part of Leeds United's academy set-up.
The left-back signed a new deal with the Whites earlier this summer, and is tied down to Elland Road until 2029.
The versatile defender is highly rated by club officials after being left impressed with his performances at Thorp Arch.
Lienou has already made four appearances for the U21s, but was strangely benched for the 4-4 draw with Middlesbrough in the Premier League 2 on Sunday.
He featured in the matchday squad for both of Leeds' first two games of the season against Nottingham Forest, but is yet to make his senior debut outside of pre-season.
He is eligible for selection for Wales' national team, and their latest announcement asks questions of Leeds' development plans.
Jayden Lienou to play for Wales before Leeds amid squad news
Leeds always had a plan to sign cover for Gabriel Gudmundsson this summer, which left them with a decision to make on Lienou.
They brought in competition for Gudmundsson with the arrival of Melvin Bard, which has only pushed Lienou further down the pecking order for now.
But after getting the call-up from Wales in May, the 18-year-old could soon have the chance to play for his nation, after being unused last time.
That's because Wales have announced Craig Bellamy's squad for upcoming UEFA Nations League games, which includes none other than Lienou.
Dan James, Ethan Ampadu, Harry Wilson and ex-Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow have all been included in the Wales squad too.
This asks questions of why Leeds didn't send a clearly talented youngster out on loan this summer, especially if his nation deems him good enough to play.
Daniel Farke is yet to hand the teenager his competitive debut, and he could even play for Wales before making his maiden Leeds appearance.
How Dan James has already given seal of approval for Lienou
Leeds have plenty of talented youngsters on their hands, but their judgment of them has not always been the best.
They clearly had their priorities straight by handing him a new deal, but they must reassess the potential of sending him on loan in January, especially if he is in and out of the U21s team due to being in and around the first team with no real chance of playing.
James is big on his Welsh comrade.
The winger has previously spoken about Lienou and said, as quoted by The Athletic: "We have been training against him a lot. He’s a great lad.
"He’s been great since he’s been here and great at Leeds. He’s definitely one for the future, a great player."
There's no doubt that Lienou has a bright future ahead of him, but whether he gets the development he requires at Leeds remains to be seen.
