How Ian Poveda provides cautionary tale for Harry Gray as Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday loan confirmed
Leeds United youngster Harry Gray has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan.
The Whites confirmed that the gem had linked up with the Owls for the 2026-27 season on Tuesday.
The move is a similar step to his Rotherham stint in the second half of last season, as they were also in League One.
Daniel Farke clearly feels that Gray would be better served by a campaign away from Leeds.
The Whites have sent one player to the Hillsborough side on a temporary deal before, Ian Poveda.
However, the 26-year-old provides a cautionary tale to Gray, of what not to do with the South Yorkshire side.
Why Ian Poveda's stint at Sheffield Wednesday is a warning sign for Harry Gray
Like Gray, Poveda was a highly-rated young attacker, but he never really hit the ground running at Leeds.
The hope was a loan to the Owls would see him put himself in contention for a squad berth back in LS11.
However, he failed to score a single goal and notched just one assist in 10 matches for Danny Rohl's side.
Poveda's raw numbers don't tell the full story of the affinity he built with the Wednesday fan, as he dealt with injuries and a side that was battling relegation.
In fact, they wanted to sign him permanently but he chose to move to Sunderland instead.
Gray can't afford to repeat it, though, he needs to score goals in the Football League, and prove to Farke that he has what it takes to succeed at the top, when he is given his chance.
What does this loan mean for Gray's Leeds future?
A loan to the third tier represents the level where Gray is right now, but that is not a surprise at just 17 years old.
He has plenty of time to reach the level expected of him eventually, and a loan to the Championship is probably the next step after that.
Then he may be ready to make his Premier League bow, but he must not be rushed as that could harm his development.
Given his connection to the Whites, with his family legacy, fans want to see him play for the club, but it has to be at the right time, when he has had enough education in the senior game.
