Gabriel Gudmundsson hints at Leeds United stay with new comments
Gabriel Gudmundsson's future could have been a potential question mark at Leeds United.
The Swedish star was signed from Lille last summer in a £10million deal and has not put a foot wrong, making 32 Premier League appearances.
He is already one of the best left-backs in the Premier League, and it looked like the Whites may have had a battle on their hands to keep hold of him.
Former Peacocks defender Stephen Warnock claimed in May that rivals from the top-flight may look to move for the 27-year-old.
However, the player's latest comments have hinted that is happy to stay where he is and is not looking to move on soon.
That should provide relief to Elland Road supporters who may have feared Gudmundsson being poached before the new season.
What did Gudmundsson say about his future at Leeds United?
Gudmundsson opened up on his time at Leeds so far in an interview with an outlet from his homeland.
Speaking to Svenska Dagbladet on 9 June ahead of the World Cup, he said: “The goal was to help the club stay [in the division].
“Everything has felt good, it will be exciting to see what we can do further down the line with the group we have.”
Asked about the fans, he said: “They have been supportive all season, absolutely fantastic.
“From the first day I arrived, they have been a big factor in the success we have had.”
That suggests that he is not looking to seek a departure this summer, as Warnock may had expected.
While he did not directly say that he is staying, the line about the future being exciting suggests he wants to.
Why Gudmundsson's comment are perfect timing for Leeds
The timing of Gudmundsson's comments could not have been better for the LS11 club.
With the World Cup on the horizon, there will be plenty of eyes on the left-back, and that could have drummed up interest in his services.
However, he seems to have committed his future to the Whites for the foreseeable future, which may put any clubs who he may have gathered attention from, off an approach.
The Whites would have been able to knock them back anyway, as he is under contract until 2029, but his comments make their position even stronger.
It looks as though the defender is going nowhere, even if there is offers to take him away from Yorkshire.
It would take a very convinving offer to change that, and given his age profile and stance on an exit, they may not come, which is great news for Daniel Farke's side.
They would not want to lose the Swede, as he has proven to be a brilliant piece of business in his short time with the club.
