Patrick Bamford exit: Leeds United to reconsider transfer amid ‘Wildcard’ option

Patrick Bamford has often been a polarising figure at Leeds United.

But, love him or hate him, there should always be an element of respect for a player who has always tried his very best in a Whites shirt.

It does feel, though, that at the age of 31 it is time for both parties to accept that now is the right time to say goodbye and leave on good terms.

The Sun on Sunday reported (12 January) that Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers are interested in signing the one-cap England international this month.

However, Yorkshire Evening Post (14 January) journalist Graham Smyth revealed that sources have shared they do not expect Bamford – who is currently out injured – to depart Elland Road this month.

It feels like Leeds need to rethink their transfer stance on Bamford, though.

On the one hand, you could argue that with Joe Gelhardt on his way to Hull City on loan and Mateo Joseph struggling for regular goals, that allowing Bamford to go would not be too wise given the lack of back-up it would leave for Joel Piroe – the only player to reach double figures for goals this season in a Leeds shirt.

Leeds United need to sell Patrick Bamford

But this might be one of the last opportunities to get a bit of cash in for Bamford and – as LeedsLive reporter Isaac Johnson said (14 January) – Farke has already hinted at a “wildcard” within the ranks in the form of Willy Gnonto.

“The boss has hinted, though, that he has a wildcard striker option if needed,” Johnson wrote.

“Speaking about his striker options besides Bamford, Farke said: ‘We have got Joel Piroe Mateo Joseph, a few young prospects in our academy – and perhaps a player like Willy Gnonto can also play striker.'”

Basically, Farke has options. Piroe is going to be the main option, Joseph provides an option off the bench and for back-up, and if need by Gnonto can be utilised up top.

There is genuinely no need to keep Bamford sitting on the bench (when fit), he should be allowed to go and play elsewhere. And if they did it quick enough there would even be time to try and draft in a replacement.
