Sport Italia journalist Gianluigi Longari has reported that Zenit St Petersburg have contacted Udinese about a move for Leeds United target Rodrigo De Paul.

The Sport Italia journalist added that the club haven’t tabled an official offer for the Argentine international yet.

Leeds have been strongly linked with a move for De Paul, with Athletic journalist Phil Hay claiming that the player is keen on a move to Elland Road and that Leeds are very keen on the midfielder.

Zenit could offer Champions League football, which was said to be what De Paul wanted if he was to move from Udinese according to Il Messaggero Veneto.

Is CL a deal breaker?

Leeds have the Premier League and Bielsa. Zenit have Champions League football but they’re not a club who will be challenging to win it.

If a side like Juventus came in for De Paul it might be a different matter but we don’t think Zenit are necessarily anything to worry about.

Phil Hay has said that Leeds are not in a rush to add any more signings, certainly not before the Premier League opener against Liverpool is out of the way.

De Paul does seem like he’ll be moving if the right offer comes in. That’s a significant £36.9m (€40m) according to Gazzetta dello Sport – a figure that would see Leeds smash their transfer record for the second time if they signed him.

De Paul been left out of all the Serie A club’s pre-season friendlies and has been training separately from the first team.

The midfielder got tounges wagging in Leeds when he started liking posts from Whites fans last week.

These were quickly unliked but with that activity and Hay’s claim that he’s keen on Leeds, it does seem like the Whites are in pole position, even without elite European football.
