Phil Hay has said that Rodrigo De Paul “is keen” to join Leeds United and added “there is no doubt about that”.
Hay was talking after speculation around a De Paul move to Elland Road was fired up when the Udinese player started liking Leeds-related content on social media.
These were fairly quickly unliked but not before they’d caught the attention of many Leeds fans.
Talking about this on the latest episode of the Phil Hay Show podcast, the Athletic journalist said, “He [Rodrigo De Paul] is keen, there is no doubt about that and Leeds from their part are very keen as well.
“But it’s interesting because Leeds haven’t really moved hard to get anything else done since Rodrigo and Koch were done that weekend and £40m went out.
“Any other transfers and signings will rely very heavily on what Bielsa feels he needs. He doesn’t feel like he needs surplus players. It would be hard to describe De Paul as a surplus player, he looks like a terrific signing. Leeds could do it financially.
“If Leeds decide to go for it properly, my gut feeling is that yes he will [join Leeds].”
It was reported that Udinese want £36.9m (€40m) for De Paul with Gazzetta dello Sport saying this was a take it or leave it valuation.
That same report said De Paul was keen on a move to a club that can offer Champions League football.
Get Liverpool out the way and then pounce
Social media activity is a fairly big wink to fans and a modern twist to transfers.
The liking of Leeds tweets happened before Jean-Kevin Augustin signed for the club in January.
And, from a fan perspective, it’s hard not to see a player from another club liking Leeds tweets and putting two and two together.
Someone obviously had a word with De Paul and the tweets and Instagram posts were quickly unliked.
However, it’s great to get confirmation that the player is keen on a move to Leeds, with other reports saying he preferred to stay in Serie A or move to a club that can offer Champions League football.
However, if De Paul is keen and if Leeds are “very keen” according to Hay, what’s the hold-up?
We can only presume it’s Bielsa and while we appreciate his desire for a small squad, De Paul would be a next-level signing for us.
Strong in attack and fearsome in defence, De Paul is the perfect player to have in the Leeds squad.
His addition would mean a place on the bench for someone currently in Bielsa’s starting XI plans, but Leeds need a bigger squad for the Premier League and we’d really like to get this one done before it’s too late.
