Phil Hay shares only model that could prevent Leeds from PL promotion this season

Leeds United will only be stopped from earning promotion to the Premier League if the current Championship season is declared null and void.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay eased the fears of Leeds fans up and down the country on Friday as reports suggested that League One and Two could be decided by a point-per-game model.

It was suggested that the Championship and the Premier League are still wanting to complete the remaining games, with promotion and relegations set to stick.

Hay responded to a fan on Twitter on Friday afternoon, claiming that there are no credible models such as points-per-game that could prevent Marcelo Bielsa’s men earning promotion.

“Basically, there’s no model other than void which would stop Leeds finishing top two. Or no credible model anyway,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Michael Green, who tweeted initially before Hay’s response revealed that things wouldn’t change in the Championship table compared to the lower leagues.

Leeds would still finish as Champions, and both Fulham and West Brom would both join them if the top three were to follow them in the automatic promotion spots.

Leeds and West Brom have occupied the top-two spots in the Championship for the entirety of the season this year, and there would be serious questions raised if they were not to achieve that dream of promotion.

Broadcasters are also building the idea to finish the remaining games, with Jim White revealing that all remaining Championship and Premier League matches are set to be shown live – a feast for fans of the Whites.
