Exclusive: Robinson identifies key factor that will give Leeds 'head start' in transfer market

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…

Paul Robinson has claimed that having Marcelo Bielsa in the dugout will give Leeds United a “head start” over a lot of clubs in the transfer market this summer.

Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News the former Elland Road stopper suggested that the Argentine’s immense reputation in the professional game could be a major draw for potential recruits.

Bielsa was recently described by Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte as one of the two best managers in the world, alongside Pep Guardiola.

And Robinson is in no doubt as to just how special the Whites boss is.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, he said: You see the job that he’s done at Leeds. He’s improved players, he’s taken a team that was 13th or 14th to the top of the Championship. He’s brought players in, he’s improved the team.

“When you get players of Laporte’s stature talking about him like that, it’s why Leeds have got a head start on other teams in the transfer market. Players will want to come and play for him.

“It’s not just players who respect Bielsa, it’s managers as well. You get some of the top class managers talking about him and the way that his football brain is. He’s football obsessive.

“He’s got a very good relationship with his players – not a close relationship – but a lot of his players have got great admiration for him. It shows the hallmark of the man that he is.”

Bielsa has proved to be a hugely popular appointment since arriving at Elland Road in 2018, and has transformed the Whites from a mid-table Championship side into a Premier League club in waiting.

The 64-year-old holds a points per game record of 1.79 over the course of his 91 matches in charge, a sizeable improvement on the one point per game that Paul Heckingbottom averaged, and also his best tally in club management to date.
