Paul Merson has heaped praise on Leeds United Jack Harrison for his performance against Liverpool last weekend.

The wide man caught the eye with a stunning strike in the thrilling 4-3 defeat at Anfield seven days ago, and the Sky Sports pundit even went as far as to compare his effort to the kind of goal we regularly see from the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The strike was Harrison’s first ever in the top flight, and Merson was more than willing to wax lyrical about it when given the opportunity.

Speaking on Soccer Saturday (Sky Sports News, 12pm, September 19th), he said: “What a goal. If Messi or Ronaldo had scored that we would have been going mad.

“Everything about him, I thought he was outstanding. He stays well out wide.

“His goal was outstanding, and he plays a certain way. It was unreal. What a take under pressure, and then to have the composure to come inside and give the goalie the eye.

“It’s a special goal.”

These are big words from Merson, but it’s hard to disagree with him too much.

Harrison’s strike was simply magnificent, and the fact that it came against the champions only made it all the more impressive.

Supporters were blown away by the winger at Anfield, and after such a wonderful effort, who can blame them?

Harrison hit six goals for the Whites last term, and if he can equal or improve on that tally in the Premier League this term, that will surely be seen as a successful season from the winger.
