Graham Smyth: Leeds United star Jack Harrison told me agent is due to fly in for major new contract talks

Jack Harrison’s agent is due to meet with Victor Orta in January for talks over a new deal at Leeds United, Graham Smyth has shared.

The Whites winger is currently tied to the club until the summer of 2024, with the club fighting off interest from Newcastle in the summer to keep hold of his services.

It was expected that a new deal would have been announced by now, but responding to a fan question in a Q&A for the Yorkshire Evening Post (30 December), Smyth revealed the player himself had told him talks would continue in January and there was no need to panic.

“The man himself told us, out in Spain, that he expected his agent to fly in for talks with Victor Orta ‘next month’ and he intimated that he very much wanted something to be sorted out, stating again his love for the club and all of that good stuff,” he shared.

“It would, therefore, be a surprise if he was off in January and while Willy Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville’s emergence as genuine Premier League attackers has been a bonus for Marsch, his options aren’t so fruitful that he could afford to lose Harrison – unless of course the money was instantly reinvested.

“Not sure I can see it, personally. My money is on a new contract.”

Phew

There was definitely a bit of panic beginning to set in among Leeds fans about his future, especially with him coming out of the side recently and the January window on the horizon.

Diego Llorente and Pascal Struijk have already had new deals confirmed and Robin Koch is also said to be close to new terms, so there is definitely activity going on behind the scenes.

But it seems there is no reason for anyone to expect Harrison to go elsewhere right now, with everyone very happy about the current situation and happy to continue as they are.

With a deal edging closer over the next month or so, we can finally focus on bringing new forwards in to compete with him rather than replace him, and stop worrying about the potential blow losing him would cause.

He’s here to stay and everyone seems to be confident about it, so maybe that means that it’s fair to be confident too.
