Arsenal 'intensify' talks with Leeds United star Raphinha who is open to major transfer
Leeds United talisman Raphinha could soon be on his way out of Elland Road, with Arsenal ready to intensify talks with the Brazilian according to The Athletic.
The update comes less than 24 hours after Manchester City reportedly struck an agreement with the club to sign Kalvin Phillips.
David Ornstein and Phil Hay reported on Saturday afternoon (25 June) that Arsenal are ready to step up their interest in Raphinha after seeing an initial bid rejected, with the Brazilian open to the move.
“Arsenal are ready to enhance their proposal, in the hope that it brings them closer to an agreement with their Premier League counterparts”, Ornstein claims.
“There is a sense around the situation, and among the other teams interested in Raphinha, that Arsenal are now firm favourites for his signature.”
A worrying trend
This update, combined with the news that Phillips could be heading for Manchester, sets a worrying precedent for Leeds.
Manchester City reportedly agreed to a £42million fee for Phillips yesterday (24 June), a surprisingly low fee for a player of his calibre.
Raphinha leaving as well suggests that Leeds are struggling to hold on to their brightest stars if a richer club comes circling. With the reliance Leeds placed on the winger last season, he would need to be replaced by a player of comparable quality.
There was hope around a potential move for Charles De Ketelaere, but the club have reportedly been put off by his £34m price tag.
Alternatively, they can replace Raphinha with a number of players who will collectively do the same job as him.
In theory, this will fill the gap left by the outgoing star while also lessening their reliance on a single player.
The Whites have already signed Brenden Aaronson in an attacking sense this summer, but extra signings will be needed.
Both Raphinha and Phillips leaving in the same window would be a massive blow to Leeds, but the club can make up for it with shrewd incomings.
In other Leeds United news, the club have reportedly set a “huge” asking price for Jack Harrison.
