Paul Robinson says there's 'no excuses' for 'devastated' player in Leeds draw vs Crystal Palace

Leeds United were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace on Sunday, but it could have been worse.

A win for Leeds at Elland Road would have lifted them up to third place in the Premier League.

However, Pierre Sage's side kept out the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Noah Okafor, leaving Leeds fifth in the table.

That is a respectable position to be in, although some will consider this an opportunity missed.

At the same time, it could easily have been zero points for Leeds on the day.

That is after an incident in the second half that worked in Leeds' favour.

Leeds survive Crystal Palace scare

Tyrick Mitchell thought he had given Palace the lead at Elland Road, only for VAR to intervene.

Anan Khalaili was rightly adjudged to be in an offside position prior to squaring the ball to Mitchell to convert.

But as pointed out by Paul Robinson on Sky Sports' live coverage of the match, Khalaili should never have been in an offside position.

"He should keep himself onside," Robinson said. "He's looking across the whole Leeds back five and can see every single one of them.

"He can have no excuse to run offside in that position. He'll be devastated."

Leeds fans celebrated the overturning of that goal as though their side had themselves scored, but were the Whites deserving of more?

Daniel Farke's side did have the better of things against Palace, who have made a slow start to life under Sage - in the league, at least.

Leeds had 13 shots to Palace's 12, with two and four on target respectively.

However, the expected goals (xG) value paints a better picture of what played out in West Yorkshire.

United had an xG of 1.36 to their opponents' 0.76, suggesting they had the better of the limited chances to win the game.

Ultimately, though, Leeds cannot complain about the draw too much, and it will do little to dampen spirits around Thorp Arch after a very encouraging start to the season.
