Lukas Nmecha's Leeds goal vs Sunderland 'has to be seen to be believed'
Lukas Nmecha may never score a more clever goal in a Leeds United shirt than the one he's just netted against Sunderland.
The 27-year-old is at an interesting stage of his career, as he battles for a bigger role at Elland Road.
Having signed on a free transfer last summer, the seven-cap Germany international provided a modest return of seven goals and three assists in 37 total appearances in 2025-26.
Albeit not in a competitive fixture, but Nmecha is now up and running on the goals front for 2026-27, as Leeds beat Sunderland 1-0 in New Jersey.
Daniel Farke's side now have their first pre-season win under their belts, ahead of tough final four run outs before their Premier League campaign gets going on 22 August.
And, Nmecha's match-winning strike against Sunderland was one fit to win any game of football, and may just give Farke food for though regarding his role in the team.

MOT Leeds News has been following reports claiming that Leeds are still searching for a new striker this summer.
Should they indeed sign one, that could push Nmecha right to the fringes of Farke's squad, and potentially even out the exit door.
Until that happens though, Nmecha has to take his pre-season chances to put himself in Farke's thinking, and his goal against Sunderland is one that won't be forgotten for a very long time.
Just eight minutes into the game, good pressing from Ao Tanaka saw him block an attempted pass from Sunderland's Enzo Le Fee, which then ricocheted into the path of Nmecha.
What happened next was something Premier Sports described via X as a "finish that has to be seen to be believed."
Nmecha spotted Sunderland keeper Melker Ellborg way off his goal line, and from all of 40 yards, took one touch with his right foot before slicing through the ball with his left to spin the ball low and hard towards goal.
The backtracking Ellborg attempted to dive down to his left to make the save, but the ball rolled past him before clipping the inside of the post and into the back of the net.
This was a strike that sent a clear message to all about the quality Nmecha possesses, but do his underlying numbers from last season also suggest that Leeds would be making a mistake pushing him down the pecking order this summer?
How Nmecha was amongst Premier League's best in 2025-26
If you were to ask the average Premier League fan whether they though Nmecha was a top striker in the league last season, the vast majority would probably say no.
After all, he did only start 10 league games last term scoring six goals and providing one assist, but when you peel back the curtain, his underlying numbers tell a very different story of how impactful he was for Leeds.
As per FotMob, no Premier League striker per game in 2025-26 covered more metres (163) or ran as many metres (150) than Nmecha.
Meanwhile, he also ranked in the top 4.1 percentile for his 0.59 number of sprints per 90, as well as being in the leading 8.2 per cent for his 0.61 expected goals per game.
In short, Nmecha brings a lot more to the table than some may realise, and so if new signings arrive in the centre-forward position this summer, then Leeds could come to regret not finding a bigger role for him at Elland Road.
