Leeds United will look to last season as hope for their European ambitions.

That may sound like an odd perspective to take, but a new reveal has made that a realistic approach to take.

An unbeaten Premier League start for the Elland Road outfit has put fire in the belly of Daniel Farke, his players and the fans.

And with it returning this weekend following the international break, they will want to prove they belong in the fifth place Leeds currently take up.

A trip to the Emirates will prove difficult on Saturday, though, as Arsenal are the Premier League champions afterall.

But no matter the result, the Whites already have a positive omen for the rest of the season.

Why last season now provides Leeds indication for 2026-27

Five games is still too early of a stage to assess a Premier League campaign, but history actually suggests the table can provide clues about where teams may end up come May.

As shared by BBC Sport, after five games of the 2025-26 Premier League season, 65 per cent of the competitors finished within four places of where they were located this period.

For Leeds United, if they were to follow that trend, that would see them finish anywhere from top of the Premier League down to ninth.

Of course, the expectation is not for Leeds to go on and win the top flight title, but it gives them a welcome omen on their European aspirations.

Last season, the Premier League did earn eight European places, through UEFA coefficient rankings, as well as cup competition places going into the league table.

There were a few outliers, with Tottenham, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace finishing 10 or more places from their five-game finish.

And Leeds will want to ensure they remain the rule, rather than the exception.

The likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ethan Ampadu will need to keep the squad grounded to make that the case.

Where Leeds now stand in global power rankings as remarkable rise continues

What is Leeds' recent history after five games in the Premier League?

When it comes to Leeds' own personal history in the Premier League after five games, they also seem to follow this trend.

In 2020-21, they were in 12th place after the first five matches, and finished ninth by May.

The following season, they finished 17th after 38th matches, after being in 17th after five games.

2022-23 is an outlier for the Whites, who were in seventh after the opening five, and later got relegated at the end of the season.

But in their first season back in 2025-26, they returned to following this reveal by placing 14th after initially being 12th.

So, while it is a strange coincidence, it seems there is at least something to look into here.
